COVID Updates - We will be communicating updates along the way, please visit this page for updates.

**Sept 10th updates
Thank you all for being patient with us, as we navigate through this.

  • Registration has gone very well, and is coming to a close.  Payment nights are Sept 10th, 6-9pm, Sept 13th 1:30-4pm at Newcastle Town Hall.

  • Due to the mandated smaller team sizes, we will be having 8 additional teams this year!   With more teams, comes more ice needed (Arena has approved our request), as well as more coaches needed (please watch for additional info on this).

  • Partnership for the Bubbles has been confirmed.  We will be partnering with Orono Leafs (for divisions U8-U18), and Durham Crusaders (for divisions U11-U18).
  • Game format will be 4 on 4, with guidelines of when to go 3 on 3 (in event of absent players).  U11(Atom) and below will be following pathways program (click here for more info).  Game format will be reevaluated once we hit Stage 4.
  • There will be no evaluation skate this year, due to Covid restrictions.  The board will be utilizing previous seasons assessments, coach input, as well as previous rosters to help build and balance.  More info on this tbd.
  • Safety guidelines are being finalized with the Arena, Public Health and Municipality.  These will be shared once confirmed, including Spectator policy(with younger siblings).
  • Creation of Bubbles, and Plan approval is in progress, and progressing well.  We are still targetting Oct 3 as first on ice day

Last Updated: September 10, 2020

In order for the kids to get back onto ice, each Minor Hockey Association is required to develop a plan that will then be approved by the OMHA, Municipality of Clarington, Newcastle Arena, and our Public Health Unit (Region of Durham).  As you can imagine, this is extensive, and Newcastle Hockey are prioritizing this.  We will be communicating updates along the way, please visit this page for updates.

OHF have released their framework, and OMHA have approved. We have moved to Stage 3B Sept 1.

Below are some highlights of the info we have at this point:

  •  There will be no leagues at any level, and teams will play in small bubbles of tiered skill level
  • Teams will consist of 9 players,1 goalie and will play in a bubble of up to 5 teams (same skill level where possible)
  • Bubbles will be with teams from within our Public Health Unit   (update: Orono and Durham Hockey Associations)
  • Game play will consist of 3 on 3, 4 on 4 structure, with rules that focus on removing deliberate and prolonged contact.   Referees will be used, and score kept  (update: will be 4on4, as well as following pathways where applicable)
  • Game time structure based on a 50-minute ice slot • 5 min warm up • 2 x 22 min period run time • 1 min intermission between 1st and 2nd period
  • Players that played AAA or AA elsewhere last season, have the option to stay with their 19-20 Association, or back to home center(Newcastle)
  • No new moves allowed, unless you have moved into Newcastle Hockey boundaries
  • Kids will continue to have practice, games, and power skating skill sessions
  • No tournaments/exhibition games, no rep or tryouts until stage 4 (info tbd)
  • New Arena protocols, health screening/tracking will have to be followed

Teams:

  • Teams will consist of 9 players,1 goalie and will play in a bubble of up to 5 teams
  • The bubble could consist of other Newcastle teams, as well as teams from within our Public Health Unit (Durham Region Health).  This will vary, and dependent on numbers in that division  (update: Orono and Durham Hockey Associations)
  • Smaller bubbles will be set up for coaching staff
  • Teams will be tiered based on skill level where possible (ie. Tier 1 could be kids who played rep last season, Tier 2 house league last yr, etc), and their bubble would consist of teams with same skill level.  If tiering is not possible due to overall numbers between 3 centers, the teams will be evenly balanced at at T2 level for whole the division.
  • Coaches will only be allowed to be in 1 bubble  (update: Coaches can be on up to 2 rosters)

Rep:

  • No Rep league, no tryouts until stage 4, info tbd
  • Kids who played rep last season, will be put into a tier and bubble with same skilled players (where possible)
  • Players have the option to stay with their 19-20 team, or back to home center(Newcastle)
  • If they chose to stay with 19-20 Association, they just need to register directly with them.  No need for a release from Newcastle
  • No new moves allowed, unless you have moved into Newcastle Hockey boundaries

Registration:

  • Closes Sept 4, spaces limited
  • Installment option available
  • Ice cost for Association will increase, due to accommodate smaller teams/more teams, along with additional operational expenses (ie. jerseys, equipment, etc)
  • Registration fees will stay the same as previously communicated, more info on Registration HERE

Arena:

  • New Arena protocols, health screening/tracking will be followed
  • Current guidelines include no dressing rooms, health screening/contract tracing, directional movement, etc. but this will change as the Arena confirms guidelines, and movement through phases
  • As of Aug 26, the Municipality is now allowing 1 spectator/child into the arena.  This will continue to evolve and we will update when available.   They are also getting clarification on younger siblings
