In
a Sunday evening game your Stars met Mariposa for the first time in what would
become a penalty filled contest with twelve total goals scored. Tender Lucas Armstrong took the net for the
Stars in a rough and chippy affair that saw a Mariposa forward get tossed from
the game for three stick penalties while the Stars had many penalties as well.
In fact, the Stars played most of the second period shorthanded due to a 4-minute
major and many other penalties.
It
started out well for the Stars as they jumped out to an early lead with leading
scorer Lucas Munns finding the netting. It seemed as if the Stars were finding
their groove until a mismanaged puck found its way into the back of the Stars’
net. Mariposa took the mishap and stormed out to a 4-1 lead early in the
second. Glenn Richards from Mariposa got a hat trick. The stars will be wise to
watch that scorer in the future. Again, the Stars didn’t just give up and mail
it in. They fought back as, refreshingly, they always seem to do. Lucas Munns,
true to form, threw the team on his back and tied the game. Mariposa was
stunned that your Stars dared mount a comeback so they started getting chippy.
One Mariposa player was ejected for too many stick penalties. The Stars, too,
got some penalties. Mariposa wasn’t ready for what happened next. Young center
Carter Lessels had the tiebreaker showing that big things come in small
packages as he beat the towering Mariposa tender. Then Gavin Drummond struck
hard and fast for not one, but TWO goals! It was 6-4 Stars with two minutes
left. Then penalty trouble hit the Stars hard. In a very inopportune time the
Stars went to the penalty kill. Mariposa loaded up with their powerplay and
struck quickly. They would score two to even the game at 6 goals apiece. Your
stars are now 2-3-2 after a busy weekend against two very solid U13 teams. The
Stars travel to Haliburton on Thursday to face the second placed Highland squad
in another tough contest. Let’s hope our Stars get healthy and run a full squad.
GO STARS!
