Thursday,
October 12th saw the Newcastle Stars U13s open their season with a
Nail-biter of a win against the Durham Crusaders. Your Stars got on the board
early with a strong performance by power forward Max Stoker as he stormed the
O-zone and beat the Crusader tender blocker-side. The score stayed 1-0 for some
time due to the strong play by the Newcastle defence and goaltender “Brick Wall”
Brennan Haslam.
The Crusaders scored next to even the tilt. Shortly after, the
Stars got in penalty trouble but were able to turn the tide with Max Stoker
again finding the back of the net with an exciting short-handed goal. The crusaders
didn’t back down, however, as they added another goal to even the game mid
third period. Luckily, Adam Cousins, in his first game back since injury,
sniped the game winning goal with two minutes left to force the Crusaders to
pull their goaltender and play with six for the equalizer. The Stars held firm and survived the six man
onslaught, with Gavin Drummond seemingly all over the ice stopping the
crusaders at every turn. It was a character win for the Stars who seek to
continue to build team chemistry. The Stars face Sturgeon in Fenelon Falls, Monday,
